UKRAINE: Ukrainian authorities have seized a large shipment of refrigerant that was imported into the country and mistakenly declared as humanitarian aid to avoid paying customs duties.
Operatives of the territorial administration of the Bureau of Economic Security in the Kyiv region, together with border guards and customs officers, uncovered the fact of illegal import of refrigerant worth about 354 thousand euros.
The investigation identified a group of individuals who used the details of a charity to import gas declared as humanitarian aid in order to evade customs duties.
During the pre-trial investigation, it turned out that the director of an unnamed charitable organization had previously been brought to justice for the illegal use of humanitarian aid for personal gain.
The Economic Crime Service has not identified what refrigerant(s) were used, but one of the cylinders in photographs of the seizure is labeled R125.
