BELGIUM: Daikin Europe has officially received BREEAM Excellent certification for its €140 million research and development center in Ghent, which will start operations in 2024.

The 30,600 m² building serves as the headquarters of Daikin Europe’s R&D centre and a central hub for the development of next-generation heating and cooling technologies. It was designed and built to achieve near-zero energy (nZEB) certification and BREEAM Excellent.

The 56-meter-high facility includes 13,000 m² of office space spread over 14 floors, 12,000 m² of laboratory space, including 23 test rooms, and space for 500 employees.

Five custom-made ventilation units provide an air flow of 85,000 m³/h and a cooling capacity of 297 kW, ensuring a constant supply of fresh air for the 13,000 m² office space. Highly efficient heat wheel technology ensures energy consumption is optimized.

An additional innovation is the introduction of R32 refrigerant into the direct expansion coil of Daikin ventilation units.

The VRV solution includes a wide range of Daikin products, including both air and water cooled systems. The indoor units, including satellite models, cassette and ceiling units, have been carefully selected to meet specific space requirements.

BREEAM certification goes far beyond energy efficiency, covering a wide range of criteria including indoor environmental quality, water management and sustainable building management.
