United Kingdom: Daikin Europe has continued its collaboration with Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), signing a five-year collaboration agreement aimed at expanding low-carbon heating across the city region.
The new agreement builds on the success of a previous Memorandum of Understanding between GMCA and Daikin, which focused on decarbonisation and the transition to low-carbon heating, green skills development and jobs for Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester is one of the UK’s most successful urban regions, home to over 2.8 million people and an economy larger than Wales or Northern Ireland.
“Our partnership has delivered low-carbon heating technology through the installation of 1,500 heat pumps, while also promoting clean technology to young people and expanding our offer of green skills,” said Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham.
As part of this renewed partnership, Daikin UK will chair the newly established Greater Manchester Low Carbon Heating Advisory Group, which will bring together businesses and policymakers to strengthen collaboration across the region’s green economy, address decarbonisation challenges and support Greater Manchester’s journey towards net zero emissions.
The renewed commitment aims to install 64,000 low-carbon heating systems across Greater Manchester between 2025 and 2030. It also aims to create a rental offer for heat pumps for Greater Manchester residents, avoiding the need for upfront costs.
To support installers, Daikin is investing in a new training centre at Trafford Park, scheduled to open in summer 2025, increasing training capacity from 1,400 to 4,200 per year. The centre will also provide opportunities for people who meet the necessary qualifications but do not have the funds to undertake the course themselves.
Daikin will also help GMCA tackle homelessness in the region and support the Embassy Village project, providing 40 high-quality homes in Manchester for homeless people with a village council and green spaces for sports, socialising and growing plants. Daikin will oversee the installation of the 40 heat pumps that have already been delivered, in partnership with contractor Temperature Control. It will also provide heat pump training to residents, as well as mentoring and volunteering from the Daikin team in Manchester.
By March 2026, Daikin will connect at least 170 heat pumps in Greater Manchester social housing with 5G Innovation Region funding, build tariff support and connectivity into any social housing contract for heat pumps, and work with energy suppliers to launch Daikin’s heat pump feed-in tariff based on usage and promote it in connected homes.
Daikin UK CEO Tomoji Miki said: “Over the past two years, we have advanced decarbonisation and addressed the skills shortage, which is critical to the transition to net-zero emissions. Daikin is committed to achieving Greater Manchester’s carbon neutrality target by 2038 and supporting the region through innovation and investment.”
